  • Ellis D Atwood first opened Edaville Railroad in 1947 in the cranberry bogs of South Carver, Massachusetts. The original collection included most of the surviving Maine 2-foot gauge locomotives and rolling stock. Although Edaville is one of the oldest heritage railroads operating in the United States, the original park closed in 1991. At that time the collection was relocated to Portland at the Maine Narrow Gauge Museum. In 1999 the park was reopened although the nearly 6-mile route had been shorted to 2.5 miles. <br />

The railroad owns two operating steam locomotives although one of them, #21 is undergoing repairs at Maine Locomotive & Machine Works in Alna, Maine. Seen here is  #11, built by the Boothbay Railway Village in Boothbay Maine. It is a combination of two 1925 Porter locomotives, #10 and #11 that were longtime display pieces on the Edaville property.<br />

  • Amtrak train 470 is seen headed North into Springfield as locomotive 103 brings up the markers in push mode, 11-9-21.
  • CT Rail train 4405 is seen departing Springfield for New Haven, 11-9-21.
  • Due to a mechanical failure, a work train power set was sent out to rescue a morning commuter train. The return trip allowed for a not-so-common shot of a locomotive facing South by the new signals in Wilmington, 9-27-21.
  • The Boston section of the Lake Shore Limited is seen passing some of the last New York Central searchlight signals on the Boston Line at CP-11 in Weston, MA. One of the 50th-anniversary units is leading the train Two of these units have been in frequent service between Boston and Chicago, 9-11-21.

  • With the PTC implementation continuing on the Lowell Line, the Boston & Maine searchlight signals are rumored to be retired this weekend. I had been procrastinating shooting here but was able to squeeze out a shot of. purple train in fresh snow before the signals fall, 1-28-21.
  • 2020 has been a weird year to say the least. The only real upside has been the ability to get out and shoot more trains, especially unique trains. I never thought that I would see a New Hampshire Northcoast Geep pulling a commuter rail train, but here we are. Due to PTC implementation, this engine needed the upgrade in order to pull trains into the city to Boston Sand & Gravel. The engine was put on a commuter set and run on the Eastern route to test the new equipment. The train is seen passing through the industrial sections of Everett and Chelsea, 12-29-20.

  • It is rather unusual to see a locomotive on the inbound side of an MBTA commuter rail train. Due to the forecast today, several sets had engines on each end to deal with snow. Train 1306 is seen at Montvale Ave on the old Boston & Maine New Hampshire Route, 12-17-20.
  • An Ashmont-Mattapan High-Speed Line trolley is seen arriving at Butler Station during peak fall foliage. The post World War 2 Pullman-Standard trolleys have been in constant revenue in Boston since they were built, 10-21-20.
