  • Colfax, California is a railroad town to the core, a legendary town first serviced by the Central Pacific Railroad and later the Southern Pacific. The railroad was also the southern terminus of the Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad until its removal in 1942. The town is proud of its railroad heritage, as evidenced by the train-themed businesses and the small railroad museum, and Southern Pacific caboose. Smoke from the ongoing Dixie Fire obscured the town as an Eastbound Z train crosses over Grassvalley Street in the heart of town, 8-18-21.
  • An Eastbound intermodal train is seen passing Gold Run on the way up to Donner Pass. The smoke from the Dixie Fire was thick causing the air to be hazy, 8-18-21.

  • An Eastbound Union Pacific Z train is seen rounding the curves in Casa Loma above the American River Canyon. The smoke is thick in the air from the ongoing wildfires in the area, including the Dixie Fire which has grown to be the second-largest wildfire in California history, 8-18-21.
  • An Eastbound Union Pacific intermodal is seen pulling up the steep grade Donner Pass through the snowsheds at Norden. This is a legendary location on the former Southern Pacific. The searchlight signals still stand, but their replacements are nearby waiting to be installed. The train stopped here to wait for the Westbound California Zephyr before entering the “Big Hole” and creating Donner Summit, 8-18-21.
  • The Westbound California Zephyr is seen coming down from Donner Summit at Norden. The air is thick with smoke from the ongoing wildfires in the Pacific Northwest, 8-18-21.
  • A Westbound Union Pacific global Z train is seen exiting the snow sheds at Norden and passing under the Southern Pacific searchlight signals. The signals are on borrowed time as their replacements are seen next to the shed ready to be activated. The train was delayed at Truckee in order to add power for the climb over the mountain. I waited quite a while for them and got them by seconds as an Eastbound manifest train was right behind me and almost blocked the shot, 8-18-21.
