  • Pan Am local BO-1 is seen arriving at Rousselot in Peabody. The lone customer on what is known as the South Reading Branch gets service on average twice a week. The crew is pulling out the empties as the fading afternoon light shines perfectly on the nose. The cars to the right are the loads that will be shoved in. The plant has a track mobile that assists with the operation as there is no siding that the locomotive can run-around before heading out of town. The snow and ice are from a major winter storm the day before. For reasons unknown, the 507 was painted a few months ago from the Pan Am blue dip, back to the previous Guilford Rail Systems scheme, 12-18-20.

  • Pan Am Local LA-1 is seen entering Lowell Junction on the return trip to Lawrence with a rather unsightly leader. The crew has just switched out Praxair in Tewksbury and is running with an engine on each end of the train due to track work on the Tewksbury runaround, 12-9-20.
  • Although this is not the best photo that I have shot of the Pan Am OCS, it could be the last. With CSX executives on board, the train passes the Willows in Ayer. Just past this shot, the train stopped and executives from both railroads were rumored to have signed paperwork pushing the deal forward. PTC implementation in the coming weeks will also restrict these units from leading in Keolis territory. Although this run was not the best chase that I have had with these units (getting blocked by freight trains at prime spots twice) I can't complain. I shot them a fair amount over the last several years in some pretty prime locations. Even still this train is one that I will miss, 11-19-20.
  • I haven't done much night photography as I do not have a full set of flashes. Since the OCS was running through my area I decided to try to improvise with what I do have at CP 303 in North Chelmsford. My goal was to get the train a little closer but I fired the shutter a second too soon. Live and learn, 11-16-20.
  • Pan Am road freight POAY (Portland, Maine to Ayer, Massachusetts) is seen passing through Lawrence at the signal for CPF-AS. Once a bustling mill city, most of the industry here has closed down, 11-6-20.
  • The 267-foot tall clock tower at Ayer Mill in Lawrence is reported to be the largest mill clock tower in the world. The four glass faces are only six inches smaller than the faces of Big Ben in London. The platform and canopy to the left of the train is the site of the former Lawrence Station. With word of an afternoon POAY road freight having a GP40 leader, this shot immediately came to mind. The Maine Central 354 was originally built for the Penn Central in 1969 and served through the Conrail era, 11-4-20.
