  • Lawrence-based local LA-3 is seen picking up an empty spine car as they work customers inside "The Shops." This area, known formally as Iron Horse Park is the site of Pan Am Railway's headquarters. The large brick building to the right was the Boston & Maine Billerica Shops where the B&M performed heavy repairs on its locomotive fleet as far back as the steam era. Today the structure is in major disrepair. The railroad still services a handful of customers inside the complex, most often switched by the Sunday-Thursday LA-3 job, 1-31-21.
  • On a frigid January morning, Pan Am EDPO is seen passing the signals at CPF-GL in Fitchburg. The suspension bridge that carries Fifth Street over the tracks and the North Nashua River has a likeness to the Zakim Bridge in Boston, 1-30-21.

  • With the PTC implementation continuing on the Lowell Line, the Boston & Maine searchlight signals are rumored to be retired this weekend. I had been procrastinating shooting here but was able to squeeze out a shot of. purple train in fresh snow before the signals fall, 1-28-21.
  • The Fore River crew is seen shoving a cut of tallow loads toward Twin River Technologies on a section of street running inside the Fore River Shipyard. The bridge over Fore River from Quincy into Weymouth is seen above the train. The classic General Electric B23-7 was built as Conrail 1992 in July of 1979, 1-7-21.

  • Normally I am not of fan of higher drone shots but there are times that it is necessary to show the entire scene. Fore River Transportation is seen pulling a string of empty tanks getting ready to pull them out of the shipyard toward the CSX interchange in Braintree. The Route 3A bridge from Quincy into Weymouth is in the background as well as the USS Salem which was built in these yards during the 1940s. The railroad runs most weekdays and services the Twin River Technologies company. Twin River also owns the railroad. • Pan Am LA-1 is seen testing the ACSES PTC system on a pair of NS SD60Es. Norfolk Southern equipped a number of these units in order to run intermodal trains into Ayer on Pan Am Southern over commuter rail territory. The units have been testing in the area and are seen passing through Wilmington on a dank, December day, 12-30-20.
  • 2020 has been a weird year to say the least. The only real upside has been the ability to get out and shoot more trains, especially unique trains. I never thought that I would see a New Hampshire Northcoast Geep pulling a commuter rail train, but here we are. Due to PTC implementation, this engine needed the upgrade in order to pull trains into the city to Boston Sand & Gravel. The engine was put on a commuter set and run on the Eastern route to test the new equipment. The train is seen passing through the industrial sections of Everett and Chelsea, 12-29-20.
