Revere, MA - 2nd Alarm, 93 Rice Ave, 1-19-04
At roughly 2:10 PM Revere MA Fire Department received a call for a building fire on Rice Avenue. Box 59 was struck and Engine 1, Engine 3, Engine 4, Ladder 1, and the Deputy Chief responded. Normally Engine 5 would be first due, but they were tied up at another incident. First in companies reported smoke showing from a 2 1/2 story wood frame house (193 Rice Ave). Companies were met with a heavy smoke condition inside the house, and advanced lines. The fire had started in a basement crawspace, and was traveling up the walls. Deputy Chief Taglieri (C-2) ordered a Second Alarm, which brought in Revere Engine 5, Revere Ladder 2, Chelsea Engine 3, Boston Engine 56, and Boston Car 1. Chief Eugene Doherty (C-1) then arrived on scene and assumed command. Companies made an agressive interior attack, and stopped the fire quickly. The fire was in the basement, with some extension to the first floor. Firefighters had to deal with cold temperatures and snow on the street, which complicated the situation. The cause was determined to be a plumber trying to thaw out a pipe with a torch. Damage was estimated at 75,000 dollars. Note: Prints not available for this, as these are scanned 35 mm pictures.
